"Providing philanthropic support to Midland Memorial Hospital since 1945"

Click here to view the latest edition of Focus on The Future Newsletter.

Midland Memorial Foundation is a 501c3 nonprofit corporation organized exclusively for the benefit of Midland Memorial Hospital. Governed by a volunteer board, the Foundation was established in 1945 for the purpose of raising funds for a community hospital. Since Midland Memorial Hospital opened in 1950, the Foundation has been active in securing additional gifts for the expansion of the physical plants, purchase of new equipment, and initiation of valuable new programs and services.

The hospital was established by prominent community leaders with one mission, "to make quality healthcare available in this region". It was built with funds donated by individuals, corporations and foundations as a nonprofit, community-based hospital, offering medical care to all Midlanders, regardless of their ability to pay.

The Foundation's Board of Governors recognize that philanthropy will not only continue to play a significant role in providing funds for Midland Memorial Hospital but that the benevolence of donors will become the critical link between community and regional needs and the quality of care provided.

Midland Memorial Foundation gratefully acknowledges a rich history of philanthropic support and is committed to broadening our fundraising efforts so Midland Memorial Hospital can continue to meet the health care needs of a growing and dynamic community and region.

We invite you to explore our site to find out more about our current projects, special events and how you can support the mission of Midland Memorial Hospital.

Faces of Philanthropy

"People of Extraordinary Generosity"

Establishment of the Larry and Dorothy Melzer
Physician Recruitment Endowment Fund

In 1951, one year after Midland Memorial Hospital first opened its doors, Dorothy Melzer joined the MMH Auxiliary. Over the course of the next 53 years, Dorothy worked in every area of the hospital, including serving as Director of the MMH Auxiliary. During her many years of volunteer service, Dorothy came to realize how difficult it was for the Hospital to recruit physicians to Midland. Recognizing the importance of having a full complement of physicians in Midland, coupled with the fact that both her father and father-in-law were doctors, Dorothy decided to create an endowment fund designated for physician recruitment.

Midland Memorial Foundation is pleased to announce the establishment of the Larry and Dorothy Melzer Physician Recruitment Endowment Fund. Throughout their 69 years of marriage, Dorothy and Larry held true to the life lessons they learned from the dedication of their fathers who were both self-educated, country doctors. Dorothy Melzer’s recent donation to Midland Memorial Foundation honors Dr. S. W. Melzer, the father of her late husband, Larry, and her own father, Dr. E. E. Brooks. Earnings from this perpetual fund will be used toward the cost of recruiting physicians which, on average, approximates $35,000 per individual.

From an early age, we were taught that the greatest achievements in life are those that benefit others, and that the gift of love never dies. The entire Midland community will benefit from this loving gift, and we are thankful to Dorothy for reminding us about the important lessons we were taught so long ago!

Midland Memorial Foundation
Establishes
Janet’s Closet Fund

Since its implementation earlier this year, Janet’s Closet has brought many smiles to the faces of Midland Memorial’s pediatric patients. When a child undergoes a painful procedure, such as starting an IV line or a lumbar puncture, he or she is taken to Janet’s Closet to select a toy or game that is then his or hers to keep. This helps the young patients better cope with pain, fear and a sense of isolation. Plans also are underway to establish one or more Janet’s Closets at the MMH main campus.

This inspirational project was named in memory of Janet McKown Ward, a pediatric nurse at MMH for 23 years until her death in 2004. A survivor of Hodgkin’s disease at age 17, Janet knew all too well what it felt like to be a patient. Throughout her career at Midland Memorial, Janet was deeply passionate and devoted to the many children she cared for and came to know. During planning discussions regarding the new service, MMH pediatric staff immediately knew that Janet’s Closet was the perfect name to honor the memories of Janet’s exemplary attitude and performance.

Starlight Children’s Foundation, an organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for children with chronic and life-threatening illnesses and life-altering injuries, contributed many of the toys initially received for Janet’s Closet.

Many other individuals have chosen to contribute funds to keep Janet’s Closet fully stocked. Midland Memorial Foundation is honored to help with this project by establishing the Janet’s Closet Fund. Donations made to this new fund will be used to purchase toys requested by the MMH Pediatric Unit staff when supplies need to be replenished.

Anyone interested in contributing to Janet’s Closet may mail donations to Midland Memorial Foundation, 2200 West Illinois Avenue, Midland, TX 79701, or utilize our easy on-line option at www.midlandmemorialfoundation.org/donation.

Memorial Forum

Memorial Forum, organized by Midland Memorial Foundation, was established to unite a growing group of Midland's young, influential professionals who share Midland Memorial Hospital's mission to ensure caring, quality health care for all community members, regardless of their ability to pay.

The Memorial Forum, while not a fundraising support group, will develop ideas that will strengthen the work of Midland Memorial Foundation. The Forum will serve the community by offering young professionals the opportunity to:

  • work directly with healthcare professionals on issues facing the future of health care;
  • provide a voice for their generation in the future of health care in the Permian Basin; and
  • return to the community with information and advocacy.

The Forum will also afford its members an opportunity to network and gain exposure to a variety of issues impacting Midland Memorial and the health care industry.

The Foundation welcomes this dedicated group of young leaders who will help pave the way for the future of health care at Midland Memorial Hospital.
