MMH In The Community

Midland Memorial Hospital

Midland Memorial Hospital has always strived to make a lasting difference in our community. For this reason, we continually make an effort to take part in several partnerships with valuable organizations in our area. For years we've teamed up with the American Heart Association, American Diabetes Association, American Cancer Society and March of Dimes to help make their annual fundraisers successful.

Not only do we contribute financially to their events, but dozens of our employees also invest their time to raise thousands of additional sponsorship dollars and make sure any needs are met as volunteers. In 2008 we were even named top fundraiser in the March of Dimes "March for Babies," a task that could not have been achieved without our wonderful employees.

Midland Memorial Hospital is committed to reaching out to the community through other programs and initiatives as well. One such event is the annual Feast of Sharing, which is focused on bringing the community together for a good free meal. We also plan and host the annual "Healthy U" Health Fair in which free health screenings are made available and educational material is distributed to members of the community.

Along with these events, we also have several different educational and volunteer programs for seniors such as: Dare to C.A.R.E. (a free screening and educational seminar for Vascular disease), the Better Breathing Club (aclub organized and facilitated by a respiratory therapist for anyone suffering from the different respiratory illnesses), and the Auxillary Department. (a volunteer group consisting mostly of senior citizens wishing to stay active in the community through volunteer work at the hospital.)

This just scratches the surface of our community involvement, as we contribute widely to several other organizations that benefit West Texans. Though tough economic times have hampered our ability to provide as many sponsorships as we have in the past, MMH is truly committed to donating volunteer hours to several local organizations that need our help most. As we look forward to the future, we hope to be able to pick up more sponsorships as our economic situation improves.

The MMH staff truly shines when it comes to community service and we are proud to play such an important role in the operation of these vital organizations and community events.

Tobacco Free policy

Providing a safe and healthy environment for our employees, patients and visitors is a top priority of Midland Memorial Hospital. In an effort to promote this goal, all properties owned or leased by Midland Memorial Hospital are tobacco free. Medical Center Hospital and Odessa Regional Medical Center are also joining our efforts to become tobacco free.

Under the new Tobacco Free policy, the use of all tobacco products is prohibited on hospital property, both inside and out. This includes formerly designated smoking areas and parking lots. The new policy applies to all MMH employees, physicians, vendors, volunteers, patients and visitors, or anyone on hospital grounds.

The dangers of tobacco use are well documented. Not only is tobacco use detrimental to the persons using it, but in many cases can affect those around the person using. For example, it is well known that second-hand smoke can contribute to cancers in non-smokers who are exposed. As a healthcare organization, we have an obligation to provide a healthy, smoke-free environment to our employees, patients, and guests, and though it will be challenging to implement, we believe it is the right thing to do.

Midland Memorial Hospital is sensitive to the fact that this change will be difficult for people who use tobacco, and we are attempting to make this policy easier on those persons by providing tobacco cessation and replacement items in our gift shops.  Tobacco cessation resources are also available at no charge for ANY resident of Midland or Ector County through the American Cancer Society Quitline at 1-877-YES-QUIT.

As a healthcare organization, it is our duty to help improve the health status of our community. For this reason, eliminating the use of tobacco products on hospital property is a logical step in the right direction. We hope you understand our efforts and choose to comply. If you have any questions or concerns regarding this policy please contact any information desk.

March of Dimes Walk

The March of Dimes March for Babies was a huge success! Midland Memorial Hospital employees raised over 12 thousand dollars for the March of Dimes this year!

The first great polio epidemic in the U.S. was in 1916. The disease infected mostly children, killing thousands and leaving many more paralyzed. On a summer day in 1921, Franklin D. Roosevelt became one of its victims and the March of Dimes was born.

Through life saving research we beat polio, but we continue our efforts to help children today by working to save babies from the silent crisis of premature birth.

Our mission is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth, and infant mortality. The March of Dimes carries out this mission through programs of research, community services, education and advocacy to save babies' lives.

March of Dimes researchers, volunteers, educators, outreach workers and advocates work together to give all babies a fighting chance against the threats to their health: prematurity, birth defects, low birthweight.

You can partner with the March of Dimes by becoming a volunteer or a donor. With your help, we can win the fight to save babies.

The March of Dimes has been conducting a host of fun fundraising activities for more than 60 years. From formal balls, chef auctions and dinners, to motorcycle rides, golf tournaments and March for Babies, each one raises money to help the March of Dimes fund vital cutting-edge research. Come join the fun and help save babies!

Food Drive

Every year MMH employees have a competition to see which department can get the most pounds of food collected per full time employee, and end the competition with a community food drive. Though departments have a good time collecting cans and gaining bragging rights as the "winners," the real winners are the families we can serve through Helping Hands and the Midland Soup Kitchen, who may not otherwise be able to enjoy a hot meal on holidays or any day. This year MMH employees gathered over 3 tons of food to help these worthy organizations.
