Dare to C.A.R.E.

Vascular Disease affects as many as 12 million Americans and frequently goes undetected. Dr. Russell Sawyer in collaboration with Midland Memorial Hospital, proudly introduce a proactive response to this alarming disease,Dare to C.A.R.E. (Carotid disease, Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm, Reno vascular disease and Extremity vascular disease) MIDLAND. This free program, first of its kind in West Texas, provides early detection testing of vascular disease.

While there are other vascular programs, Dare to C.A.R.E. is the only one that includes physician-patient interface and an educational program to increase public awareness of vascular disease. The educational component consists of a two-hour presentation that covers: high blood pressure, high cholesterol, carotid disease, abdominal aortic aneurysm, lower extremity vascular disease, and sudden cardiac death.

Screening takes place the same day, following the educational segment. This process consists of the completion and a review of the participant's medical history and assessment of risk factors. This is followed by an ultrasound exam of the carotid arteries in the neck and abdominal aorta, as well as a pulse check taken at the feet. Participants then have their blood sugar and cholesterol checked. Results are reviewed in a one-on-one consultation with a physician.

If you or a loved one would like to participate in this FREE program on Saturday,June 20th, 2009 please call (432) 520-2222 to sign up! Click here for additional information.

Space is limited, and you must be 60 years or older, or 50 and older with diabetes.

Diabetes Education

Diabetes Education at Midland Memorial Hospital is an important part of your care. Our goal is to reduce the risks of developing the long-term complications associated with diabetes through patient and family education. Each nursing unit has a nurse who will visit with you about your diabetes and work with you and your family to manage the disease during your hospital stay. A dedicated Diabetic Educator is located at the West Campus and if needed, will follow-up with you after your stay.

THE DIABETES AND NUTRITION LEARNING CENTER

The Diabetes and Nutrition Learning Center is a new MMH outpatient service that provides Diabetes Self-Management Education and Medical Nutrition Therapy for individuals with diabetes or others who have nutrition related concerns.

Diabetes Self-Management Training (DSMT)

This program is designed for individuals with diabetes. DSMT is a series of classes that are designed to provide an indepth understanding of diabetes. We perform an initial assessment, followed by three classes and one or two follow up appointments.

  • Class 1: Overview of Diabetes and Monitoring: What is diabetes, types of diabetes, risk factors for diabetes, diabetes management goals and monitoring. We can help you obtain a blood glucose monitor and instructions for its use.

  • Class 2: All About Nutrition: How foods affect blood sugar, portion control, and carbohydrate counting. You receive a personalized meal plan during this class.

  • Class 3: Exercise, Medications, Reducing Risks, Coping, Problem Solving: Also includes a review of meal planning with an emphasis on dining out. Included is a fast food guide to eating.

Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT)

MNT is available to anyone for various diagnoses. The MNT session will be one to two hours in length, depending on the reason for the session. We provide indepth nutrition counseling and an individualized meal plan.
